About Lightning Developments

Technology grounded in business experience.

Lightning Developments helps business owners make clear technology decisions, build websites and business apps, and keep them running. Our founder, Rupert Gough, brings the experience of founding, growing and selling Mortgage Lab to that work.

Rupert’s perspective

I care about how the business works, not how technical the answer sounds.

At Mortgage Lab I dealt with scattered customer information, manual reporting, spreadsheets being passed around and jobs that relied on somebody remembering the next step. Those are business problems first. Software is useful only when it makes them better.

Founded and grew Mortgage Lab before selling it in 2022.
Works with NZ businesses that have outgrown spreadsheets and disconnected software.
Understands both the day-to-day business problem and the software needed to fix it.
Keeps the work visible and agrees what is included before building starts.

Businesses we work with

Start small

Fix one worthwhile problem first

How we work

Understand it. Simplify it. Build only what helps.

The aim is not to make your business more technical. It is to make it easier to run.

Start with the business problem

The first question is not what software we can build. It is what keeps wasting time, causing mistakes or making the business harder to run.

Make everyday work simpler

A good system should make it easier for staff and customers to get things done. If it only looks impressive, it has missed the point.

Start with one useful improvement

You usually do not need to rebuild everything. Fix one worthwhile problem, use the result, then decide what deserves attention next.

Direct, practical and deliberately uncomplicated.

We work with businesses across New Zealand. Rupert leads the business perspective behind our advisory and development work. We agree the delivery and support responsibilities for each engagement, with specialist partners considered where the scope calls for them.
